The FA punishes Sandro Tonali.
The player is deemed to have violated the association’s betting rules.
Newcastle star Sandro Tonali, who joined from Milan for over 800 million kroner last year, has been involved in a betting scandal, where he has been accused of illegal gambling. In October last year, the Italian FA announced that Tonali would be banned from all football activity for ten months, and that he will undergo a rehabilitation program for gambling addiction for eight months.
The 23-year-old bet on Milan matches during his time at the club, which was the basis for the Italian FA’s punishment, and earlier this year the FA also accused Tonali of breaching FA betting rules during his time at Newcastle . Between August 12 and October 12 last year, the Italian allegedly broke the rules 50 times.
Now Newcastle announces that an independent party has decided to suspend Tonali for two months for breaching the FA’s betting rules. He is also forced to pay 20,000 pounds, equivalent to 273,000 kroner in fines.
The suspension runs concurrently with the Italian FA’s suspension, and thus he will be allowed to play football again on August 27 this year, provided he does not commit any further offenses against the FA’s playing rules during the suspension period.
According to Newcastle, Tonali has admitted his games to the FA, and continues to follow his rehabilitation plan with the club’s full support.
Tonali has not played since October 21 last year in the Premier League. He has a contract with Newcastle until the summer of 2028.
